
Kenyan McDuffieThere is a new member of the D.C. Council to replace Harry Thomas Jr., who stepped down from his Ward 5 seat after pleading guilty to embezzling more than $350,000 from the city.
Voters in Ward 5 cast ballots in a special election Tuesday.
Unofficial results with all precincts reporting had Kenyan McDuffie, a Democrat, winning with 4,085 votes; Delano Hunter, a Democrat, placed second with 1,850 votes.
McDuffie will serve the rest of Thomas' term, which runs through 2014.
Registered voters from any party were eligible to participate. Ten Democrats, one Republican and one independent were on the ballot.
Barring a recount or a surge by another candidate after absentee and provisional ballots are tabulated, the election results will be certified and McDuffie will be sworn in May 30.
