Google is making its biggest acquisition ever by buying Motorola Mobility Holdings for $12.5 billion.
Google's Android operating system runs smartphones that compete with iPhones and Blackberrys.
Motorola Mobility, which separated from the rest of Motorola in January, makes smartphones based on Android.
What Google likely wants out of the deal is access to Motorola Mobility's collection of more than 17,000 patents for phone technology.
The deal is expected to close by the end of the year but is likely to face regulatory scrutiny.
