A Metro bus driver is being credited with saving the life of one of the victims in the series of hammer attacks in the Petworth area of D.C.

Edwin Ruffin was nearing the end of his route on April 25. It was about 2:30 a.m. and he says he saw something in the middle of the road.

"Looked like a bunch of clothes in the street until I pulled all the way up, and I looked out my side window, and that's when I noticed it was a guy laying there," says Ruffin.

Ruffin stopped the bus, hopped off and immediately ran over to the man. He says the man was badly injured, covered in blood and struggling to talk.

"He was gargling, he couldn't breath. I see bubbles (of blood) and everything coming out everywhere. I don't know where it was coming from," Ruffin says.

Ruffin, who has had some first aid training, says he knew he had to do something. He grabbed the man and turned him on his side to stop him from choking. Ruffin then ordered two passengers who had also gotten off the bus to stop traffic on the busy road while someone called 911.

"I was trying to help him because he was in the street, because they come flying up Georgia Avenue," says Ruffin. "If they would have come up, they would have hit him."

Ruffin says he had no idea someone had been attacking people in the area with a hammer. He later learned the man he helped was one of at least five people brutally attacked with a claw end of a hammer over a three-day period.

One of the victims, Gary Dederichs of Colorado, died.

Police have arrested 19-year old Michael Davis. He has been charged in two of the cases.

The victim Ruffin helped is expected to survive.

Davis is being held without bond. He has a hearing on May 11.
