A dangerous process is underway in Prince George’s County Thursday night as authorities are attempting to retrieve a body from a well.
It was discovered Thursday afternoon after an anonymous tip.
Police say this is now a death investigation.
The body has not been removed from the well as there is concern of a collapse.
It is not known who the victim is, but there is speculation that it could be a missing Alexandria man.
The 20-foot well sits well off Old Fort Road in Fort Washington on an abandoned property. You can't see the property from the road and neighbors say if someone put the body there, they must have known exactly where to go.
An anonymous call to Prince George’s County Police Thursday afternoon led homicide investigators to the well.
A camera lowered into the well helped confirm a body was indeed there. Police say it will be days before the body can be retrieved and identified.
Alexandria police were also on the scene. They have a missing persons case and there is some thought that the body could be that of 53-year-old Lenny Harris of Alexandria. Harris disappeared on September 21 and his 1994 Toyota Corolla was found days later near Fort Washington.
Surveillance cameras also captured a man using Harris' credit card on King Street in Alexandria after an attempt in Prince George’s County.
Police are anticipating the recovery process will take days. The road in the area will remain closed in the meantime.
