Suspect in DC assault may be linked to other cases in Petworth

WASHINGTON -

D.C. police are investigating whether a man accused of striking a woman in the head with a hammer is also responsible for a series of similar attacks, including the killing of a man visiting from Colorado.

Police Chief Cathy Lanier said Friday that 19-year-old Michael Davis was arrested Thursday and charged with aggravated assault.

Authorities say Davis attacked the 19-year-old woman in the same Washington neighborhood where the other attacks occurred. The woman has a serious head injury.

Police say officers responding to the woman's cries spotted Davis and during a footchase, he discarded a backpack containing a hammer believed to be the weapon used in the attack.

Police are trying to determine if Davis is linked to other assaults in the Petworth neighborhood, including the killing of Gary Dederichs.

Michael Davis is the younger brother of San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis and Dolphins cornerback Vontae Davis.
