Cops Search for Lawndale Killer

The FBI and Chicago Police are looking for your help in tracking down a fugitive accused of murdering someone in broad daylight at the intersection of Pulaski and Polk in the Southwest Side's Lawndale neighborhood.

The crime happened last summer when the victim in this case, 19-year-old James Thomas, was walking across Pulaski. Another man came up behind him and started shooting.

FBI Special Agent Angela Byers said that's when 19-year-old Maurice Chandler came up and shot Thomas, chasing him into the entry way of a store where he continued shooting.

Surveillance video and witnesses led police to focus on Chandler and a month later he was charged with first degree murder.

But police could not find him, and detectives subsequently learned he may have fled the state which is why the FBI is now involved.

The murder investigation itself is being handled by Chicago police, because murder is a state crime, not a federal crime. But after investigators developed information leading them to believe Chandler may have fled to Las Vegas, where he has a relative, he was charged federally with Unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

The FBI and Chicago Police Violent Crimes/Fugitive task force has been attempting to locate Chandler in the Las Vegas area. But the search is also continuing to focus on the Chicago area where Chandler lived and has family and friends. At this point, though agents are not sure where he is, which is why they're asking for your viewers' help in tracking him down.

Here is a description of what the FBI says Chandler looks like:

  • Black male.
  • 19 years old.
  • Between six feet and six feet two inches tal.
  • Weighs about 160 pounds.
  • He has black hair, brown eyes and a medium complexion.

He is considered armed and dangerous.

If you see him, call police.
