Drinking Postmen Want Jobs Back

Posted:

We caught them red-handed drinking beer after beer after beer. Now, two postal workers who were the subjects of a Fox 29 Investigates report in January want their jobs back.

And they're turning to their union for help.

Fox 29 Investigates has learned Postal Carriers Union, Branch 157, which represents Mount Airy carriers Rudy Gray and Melvin Ingram, has filed grievances on their behalf.

Both men were placed on unpaid administrative leave following our report that showed them drinking beer in a Mount Airy tavern while on duty and later driving their postal service vehicles.

The union is also grieving management on behalf of a third unidentified worker who was also placed on leave for allegedly drinking at the bar. All three carriers worked out of Germantown station on Greene Street.

During our investigation, we also saw Gray and Ingram use scanners while drinking at the bar. The postal service told us they believed the men had copies of barcodes that are normally positioned along their routes and were scanning them to make it look like they were on the job.

The Inspector General's Office of the U.S. Postal Service launched an investigation after our report. Fox 29 Investigates has learned their probe wrapped up last week and it completely backs up what we reported.

We've also learned the three carriers could face disciplinary action, including, and up to being fired.

Calls to the union for comment were not returned, Fox 29's Jeff Cole reported.
