Teens In Violent Mob Talk To Fox 29

Posted:

For the first time, hear from the suspects who were part of the mob of teens that terrorized Center City Philadelphia last weekend.

Fox 29's Chris O'Connell has their side of the story.

Perhaps no one has better perspective on Friday's mob attacks than the people involved in it.

O'Connell sat down with two young men were part of that group, they were not involved in the attacks.

But they did explain in their own words, what they were doing there and how it grew out of control.

"Center City to us is like the Bahamas. We don't have money to go down there so when we get down there we branch out,” said one teen.

Marquis Mallory and Martez Cooper explain what happened in Center City the night when two men were assaulted by members of the group they were with.

They said the group didn’t go to Center City to start trouble, they went to meet girls.

They say they did nothing illegal. And want to clear up the perception that they were there to terrorize center city.

They do admit it got out of control because of the sheer mass of people. And they say sometime it doesn't take much to set someone off.

"It's not like we want to beat them up or nothing it's not like that. It's just respect you have to give respect to get it."

The question police have is how did the estimated 40 people all meet up at the same time.

"They want to get their friends around like let's go down there we may have some fun there may be girls down there. And then word spreads. ..Facebook all the social networks"

The two young men from North Philadelphia say a lack of jobs and activities for kids force them to look for something to do.

Meeting up in Center City they say is a change of pace from the neighborhood.

"There are people are afraid to go downtown now because of what's going on. Should they be? Don't be scared. Nothing to be afraid about. We ain't about violence. We kids. We still growing up. We just want to do what we do in our city."

These guys make no excuses for the crimes that were committed that night.

But they also say if it's a group of 5 or 50, they should be allowed to walk the streets as long as they're not causing problems. Chris, i know you've worked this story all week
