Torrie's Take

Posted:

Vanity Fair's "Hollywood Issue" comes out next week on Feb. 7th. On this year's cover readers will find actresses Roony Mara, Mia Wasikowska, Jennifer Lawrence, and Jessica Chastain. This year's issue has a Art Deco/Roaring 20's theme. These ladies are considered to be this year's hottest actresses. Now here's the problem...Thandie Newton is the ONLY woman of color to ever appear on the front cover of the Hollywood Issue . Thandie was featured back in 1999. What's the problem with having a little "color" on the cover?

Here's my take:

Women of color in the Hollywood issues get a designated area inside the article...either the center page or the very back page. This year they chose Actresses, Paula Patton and Adepero Oduye to "represent" for the center flap. I think this is crazy. It's even more crazy that Vanity Fair has been getting flap about this for years and refuses to do anything about it! Why didn't Viola Davis get a spot on the cover, it's been a big year for her? What about Zoe Saldana back when Avatar was huge? Why is Hollywood so afraid of women of color? There needs to be more opportunities for "Us". I mean, look at the great work "We"are capable of---Frieda Pinto in " Slumdog Millionaire", Gabourey Sidibe in " Precious"...to name a few. It also seems the lighter your skin the more accepted you are. For instance...Thandie making the cover back in 1999...that was probably because she could pass for being white! The same with Halle Berry winning the Oscar for Best Actress. It's 2012, we should not still be dealing with this crap. I should be able to look at multiple magazine covers, news stations, movies, etc and see a woman who looks like me, in a lead role. For a widely popular and highly regarded mag like Vanity Fair...this is just unacceptable. Smart, beautiful and capable women come in all different COLORS, sizes, and shapes! We don't all have ivory-white skin, weighing in at 90 pounds...folks should be celebrating all of us. This world is made up of many diverse women and it's about time that people get with the program!
