SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
George Zimmerman has launched a new website where he welcomes visitors with a letter and encourages any donation of support to his family.
On the new website -- www.therealgeorgezimmerman.com -- Zimmerman welcomes visitors with a letter saying, "I am the real George Zimmerman, On Sunday February 26th, I was involved in a life altering event which led me to become the subject of intense media coverage ... I have been forced to leave my home, my school, my employer, my family and ultimately, my entire life."
Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, shot and killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin on Feb. 26 in a Sanford gated community. Zimmerman claims Martin physically attacked him after Zimmerman questioned why he was in the neighborhood. The two clashed in circumstances that remain unclear, which led to Zimmerman shooting the unarmed Martin, killing him. Though he was taken into police custody that night, he was never formally arrested and has not been charged with any crime.
He said other websites and efforts to collect money for his legal defense were not affiliated with him and he wanted to give his supporters a direct link to him "as I have not received any funds collected, intended to support my family and I through this trying, tragic time."
"I have created a Paypal account solely linked on this website as I would like to provide an avenue to thank my supporters personally and ensure that any funds provided are used only for living expenses and legal defense, in lieu of my forced inability to maintain employment," he wrote.
Uhrig confirmed that the website was legitimate.
