Wisdom Martin

As a person who likes to ask lots of questions, I love it when people in the community quiz.

"Is Wisdom Martin your real name, or did you make that up for TV?"  That seems to be a popular question in the community. So yes, Wisdom is my birth name. I was named after my father who was named after his father!

"You look a lot different in person than you do on TV..." is number 2. No comment on that one, LOL.

Number 3 is usually, "How did you get into news?"  When I was a kid, I used to sit in front of the TV after school and watch the evening news with Walter Kronkite, Peter Jennings and Max Robinson. Then on Sundays, I would watch the NFL pregame shows.  That’s when I knew that I wanted to be a TV newsman.

So, when I was at Jackson State University, I majored in broadcast journalism. As a sophomore, I got my first job in TV news because of friend of mine working at the ABC station in Jackson told me about an entry-level job. I was so excited to get paid to run the teleprompter on the weekends at WAPT news.

From there I learned how to shoot video, edit and do sports reports for the weekend shows before I graduated. I still remember my first big news assignment in Jackson, covering the the trial of a man convicted of killing civil rights leader Medgar Evers.

That job behind the scenes opened the door for me to jump in front of the camera. I’ve had the opportunity to cover news and sports in KSEE in Fresno, California; WRAL in Raleigh, North Carolina (Go Tar Heels!), CNN in Atlanta, Georgia; and WKRN in Nashville Tennessee.

News continues to take me on an incredible journey here at WTTG. Since getting here in 2003, I’ve covered thdevastationon of Hurricane Katrina in new Orleans, the tragic murder of Washington Redskins football player Sean Taylor, and I was the first reporter live on the scene of FOX 5’s award-winning coverage of the serial bank robberies in D.C. I’ve also had a chance to meet and tell the stories of a lot of incredible people who along the way.
