RICHMOND, Va. - Legislation that would allow Virginia to raise speed limits on some highways from 65 mph to 70 mph heads to Gov. Bob McDonnell's desk.
The House of Delegates without discussion Monday voted 76-22 to pass the measure, which McDonnell advocated in his campaign.
The new speed limit would apply to certain interstates, multilane divided highways and high-occupancy lanes that are separated from regular travel lanes. Transportation officials would determine where to raise the speed limits after conducting traffic-safety studies.
Some legislators previously voiced opposition to the measure, saying there was no reason to increase speeds. But others said the legislation doesn't compel anyone to drive 70 mph.
Thirty-three states have speed limits of 70 mph. Twelve have 75 mph limits, and Texas and Utah allow speeds up to 80 mph.
