Silver line plan calls for mixed development

RESTON. Va. - Ground has been broken for a billion dollar mixed-use development in Reston which will be located only a few hundred feed away from the under-construction Whiele Ave. Metro station on the transit system's Silver Line.

Comstock Partners has leased a nine acre site from Fairfax County for the next 99 years. The company will build a huge, seven-level underground parking structure, office buildings, stores, apartments and condos.

The site was previously used as a commuter parking lot -- with 860 spaces. The new garage will feature 2,300 parking spots.

George Mason University Professor Stephen Fuller, who studies business trends in the region, told the crowd at the groundbreaking that Fairfax County will attract even more residents and businesses. "[The corridor from Tysons Corner to Dulles Airport will] become home to tens of thousands of new residents and new jobs, ultimately capturing one third of all the Washington metropolitan area's economic growth," predicted Fuller.

One of the people invited to the ceremonial groundbreaking was 96-year-old Robert Simon, the founder of the sprawling planned community of Reston. Simon always wanted some kind of transit for Reston. "In 1966," he recalled, "I was in negotiation for light rail. But it never materialized."

Metro's Silver Line station at Whiele Avenue is scheduled to open in 2013. Ultimately, the rail system will run trains to (and slightly beyond) Dulles Airport. During rush hours, trains in each direction are expected to depart about every seven minutes, according to Metro's General Manager Richard Sarles.
