WASHINGTON - Beginning on August 1st,  Metrorail customers who use a paper ticket will pay 25 cents more per trip than customers who use a plastic SmarTrip card.

Metro will also start adding a 20 cent additional charge during so-called "peak-of-the peak" periods.  Those are weekdays between 7:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. and afternoons between 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. The afternoon peak-of-the-peak increases take effect on Monday. The morning peak-of-the-peak increases are expected to take effect by the end of August.
