TYSONS CORNER, Va. - After a week of computer glitches because of problems with a memory storage unit near Richmond, full service has resumed at Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles offices on Thursday.
Officials scheduled more employees than usual in anticipation of a crush of customers who were unable to renew driver’s licenses for the past week. At the Gallows Road DMV office in Tysons Corner, 14 of the 17 customer windows were open in the early part of the day.
Customer lines at that office were modest. Several people reported transaction times of 20 minutes or shorter.
One customer told us (and a staffer confirmed) that the state network went down for about five minutes, but then came back up and operated normally.
To cope with the expected backlog of customers, all Virginia DMV offices will remain open one hour longer than usual (until 6 p.m.) on Thursday and Friday.
On Saturday, 11 of the state's 74 locations will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. In Northern Virginia, the Alexandria and Woodbridge DMV offices will be open those hours. The office at Fair Oaks Mall will be open on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
