PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. - Will Virginia become the next Arizona when it comes to immigration? Some hope it will, while others say that would be awful.
On Thursday, a new statewide immigration plan was announced by a man who has led his county in an effort to crackdown on illegal immigrants.
Corey Stewart, the Chairman of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors, says he believes he has enough friends and supporters in Richmond to push his plan through.
Stewart's plan statewide is similar to the one already in place in Prince William County.
It would require suspicious officers to check immigration status after a lawful detention. Illegal immigrants will not be allowed to own property or to register vehicles in the commonwealth. A fee will also be charged on all international wire transfers.
Nancy Lyall of Mexicans Without Borders, says she believes Stewart is just asking for a statewide fight. She is concerned about the reputation of Virginia across the nation.
Stewart believes Virginia will shine if his plan is approved, but Lyall thinks it could scar Virginia as it has in Arizona.
