A Dutch evangelist who painted "Jesus Saves" in huge white letters on his farmhouse roof outmaneuvered a local council order to remove it, De Telegraaf reported Wednesday.
Joop van Ooijen was told the 20-foot (6.1-meter) high message, atop his home in Giessenlanden, central Netherlands, had to go as it was too bright and formed too great a contrast with the surrounding landscape. He refused and was fined ’15,000 ($19,150) in July this year.
His solution was to paint it red. A red-faced council spokeswoman told De Telegraaf the authority was considering what to do next.
"We are faced with a new situation. Do we proceed with the imposition of a penalty or not?" a spokeswoman said Wednesday.
