It's a well-known local company that's famous for its burgers and fries. Now, it's in the spotlight for something far less appetizing.
It's an allegation that at two locations - Five Guys has a problem with rats. The company has voluntarily closed the two locations - one in Dupont Circle and one in Georgetown.
The show Inside Edition says it recorded video of a rat inside the Five Guys restaurant in Georgetown. The show also says it saw rats outside the Dupont location on two consecutive nights.
"I don't know if it's true whether there were or were not rats there and frankly I don't care. It's the food industry. It happens. I think it was really responsible of Five Guys to shut down on their own and not be re-active, but pro-active," says customer David Leeds.
But other customers told Fox 5 it might be enough to make them stop eating at Five Guys.
In a statement, Five Guys spokeswoman Amy Catalano told Fox 5, "The health and safety of our customers and employees is the primary focus at Five Guys. Previous to being notified by Inside Edition, we had recent health inspections that were clear, regularly scheduled pest control contracts and independent audits that showed no signs of rodents. We voluntarily closed our locations...and wanted to take the most aggressive response."
Five Guys say it'll reopen both locations - once it's certain they're rodent-free.
