AAA Mid-Atlantic is predicting nearly a million people in the D.C. Metro region will travel this Thanksgiving holiday, and many of them have started their getaway already.

Most are traveling by car, even though gas is 60 cents per gallon more expensive this year than last year.

Traffic along Interstate 95 was heavy, slow and steady all day long on Tuesday. AAA spokesman Lon Anderson says this year, there will be some special trouble spots due to road projects, thanks to federal stimulus money.

While construction will be suspended, he says look out for bottlenecks because of lane shifts and missing shoulders. Some of those projects involve work on the Beltway out by Tysons Corner and ongoing work on Interstate 66 in the Gainesville area of Virginia.

Also, work is underway on I-95 near the InterCounty Connector project between D.C. and Baltimore, and the hot lanes work in White Marsh on the other side of Baltimore continues.
