She was quiet and kept to herself. He was strange but cool classmates said. Police now say the teenage couple ended their lives with a suicide pact.
The bodies were found inside a home on Oakdale Circle in Triangle Monday. Desiree Patrick and her boyfriend, Quirinius Williams, were shot dead. Police say they had agreed to commit suicide.
Desiree told a friend she was in love with Quirinius, who students knew as Ryain. Now it appears there may have been some warning signs missed. Desiree's father found his 17-year-old daughter and her 18-year-old boyfriend dead inside a bedroom.
When Shafundal Tolliver heard about the deaths, she remembered something ominous.
"Somehow we got on the topic of death. He was like he really didn't care about dying and he would kill himself. That was like three weeks ago," said Tolliver, who had two classes with Quirinius and lived in Desiree's neighborhood.
The two were seniors at Forest Park High School. Prince William County Schools sent out automated phone calls and e-mails to students, informing them of the deaths. Grief counselors were available Tuesday for students and staff even though school was closed for the election. They'll be back Wednesday, when school re-opens.
School friends say Quirinius and Desiree had dated since last year and never saw signs of trouble. But looking back now, there may have another warning sign from Quirinius last week.
"He had a little star on his forehead, to worship the devil I think," said Chancellor Tolliver.
Yet that's not the Quirinius his family described as a gifted classical musician, that they loved and will miss.
In a statement, his mother Michelle Aguilar said, "Quirinius had such a loving heart and was adored by all and had a smile that could light up the room… We have lost a great, gifted son."
Police have not shed light on the motive behind the suicide pact.
Neighbor Lana Woolfrey says it's hard to fathom what led to this tragic ending for two teens with so much life ahead.
"It's unbelievable. Why? What could they have been thinking or what could have been on their minds. What kind of problems could they have that was that great?" Woolfrey pondered.
Quirinius's stepfather says he never heard him talk about suicide. This weekend he said Quirinius took his little brother trick-or-treating on Halloween and everything seemed fine.
Williams is from Woodbridge, police said. Both victims attended Forest Park High School in Prince William County.
The following message was posted on the school's website on Tuesday:
"The Forest Park High School community is deeply saddened by the tragic death of two students on Monday night. Today, November 3, the school counseling center will be open for any students and staff who wish to come in. The center will also be open tomorrow when students return to school."
In an e-mail to FOX 5, Williams' mother wrote:
"Quirinius was a very talented child who was musically inclined. He was such a gifted child and could play any classical composer masterpiece with gracefulness. We loved our child very much and will miss him tremendously, if there is anything that we could relay to other people, we would like to tell everyone that Quirinius had such a loving heart and was adored by all and had a smile that could light up the room.
We would like to thank all of the many people who have expressed their sympathy for our loss and who loved Quirinius as well. We have lost a great, gifted son that we shared with many friends, family, teachers, and acquaintances. We love you Quirinius and you will be missed!"
Statement from Bobby and Pamela Patrick
Our hearts and prayers go out to the Aguilar family for the loss of their son Quirinius "Rain" Williams. We are deeply saddened by the loss of our daughter.
Desiree and Rain have been close friends since Desiree started at Forest Park. They spent hours texting daily and looked forward to being together when they could at the movies on occasion or at school. It is tragic to live with the thoughts of what could have been for two such promising children and is difficult to understand what would push two young people to see this as the only way to be together.
Perhaps our loss will serve as a reminder to all of us that outward appearances can be very different from what is going on inside the mind of someone you love.
