A student was stabbed in the hallway of a D.C. charter school on Friday afternoon. A fellow student was arrested.

The assault happened at the Young America Works Vocational Charter School on Chillum Place in Northeast Washington.

The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. According to witnesses, two teenaged boys became involved in an altercation in the hallway in front of the nurse's office. Punches were thrown, then according to witnesses, one of the boys-- an 11th grader-- pulled out a knife and slashed the other youngster.

The victim may have been cut on his face. Witnesses say he was definitely stabbed in the throat.

Student witnesses said blood covered the victim's clothing and part of the floor in the hallway.

The victim was taken away by ambulance to a local hospital. His initial condition was described as serious.

The alleged assailant was taken out of the school in handcuffs. Other students described the alleged assailant as a special needs student.

Because much of the school was being treated as a crime scene, students were evacuated from the building. Many of them were unable to retrieve backpacks which contained textbooks, cell phones, house keys, and money for transportation.

One D.C. police officer was observed pulling several dollars from his own wallet. He gave the money to a charter school student so she could take Metro home.
