WASHINGTON - House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has announced he will introduce legislation Wednesday to reauthorize funding for the DC Opportunity Scholarship Program.
The school vouchers program was essentially terminated through attrition when Democrats controlled Congress. It grants a $7500 scholarship each year to selected inner city youth. As it stands now, students currently getting the scholarships will continue to get them until they graduate. There would be no new scholarships awarded.
But Boehner wants to breathe new life into the program. Senator Joe Lieberman (I-Conn) intends to introduce a companion bill. Boehner is hosting Cardinal Donald Wuerhl, the Archbishop of Washington, at tonight's State of the Union Address, along with several students, parents and teachers associated with the voucher plan.
President Obama's budget pulled money for the scholarships after 2010.
