BALTIMORE, Md. - New information is surfacing about that "basketbrawl" Wednesday night in Baltimore. It happened during a basketball game between D.C's Cardozo High School and Baltimore's ConneXion Academy.
Cardozo students tell FOX 5 that tensions had been escalating during the game because of controversial calls from the referee. Then someone in the stands shoved a Cardozo coach.
The fight began and spectators cleared the stands and took to the floor. Punches were flying along with chairs.
The students say Baltimore police were called in and officers began using pepper spray.
Both school districts issued a statement saying they are investigating what happened and will take appropriate disciplinary action.
Baltimore City Schools Statement on ConneXions Academy Incident:
Baltimore City Public Schools expects spectators and student athletes to exhibit excellent sportsmanship at all times. We are currently investigating the incident that took place Wednesday evening, December 21 at ConneXions Academy and will take appropriate actions as warranted by the facts and the district’s Student Code of Conduct.
DCPS Statement on the Incident:
DCPS is aware of the incident and currently reviewing all of the information that has been gathered to this point. We are disappointed any time our student-athletes are not upholding their responsibility as leaders on and off the court.
Participation in athletics is a privilege and we expect nothing but the highest level of sportsmanship from our student-athletes. Once the facts are gathered, DCPS will move swiftly and decisively to discipline anyone who was involved.
