WASHINGTON - Metro will shut down rail service at five stations on the Red Line for the three-day Labor Day Weekend. There will be no rail service from the Glenmont station to the Takoma station from Friday night to early Tuesday morning.
A work crew of 750 people will swarm over the tracks, stations, lighting fixtures, and communications cables starting late Friday night until early Tuesday morning.
Free bus service will be offered among the five affected stations: Glenmont, Wheaton, Forest Glen, Silver Spring, and Takoma Park. Some of those buses will deposit passengers at the Ft. Totten station; others will be taken to the Georgia Av.--Petworth station.
Because "bus bridges" are less efficient than straight rail service, Metro managers encourage passengers using the affected stations to add about 40 minutes to their expected travel time.
Concentrating the work on a three-day holiday weekend will save about a million dollars from the cost of the project, according to Metro planning manager Jim Hughes.
The rest of the Red Line and all other Metro lines will offer regular weekend service, including late night service on Friday and Saturday nights.
