Virginia Governor Tim Kaine refused to block the execution of a former Army Intelligence worker, which cleared the way for the convicted killer to become the first U.S. inmate to die by electrocution since June 2008.
Larry Bill Elliott, 60, chose the electric chair over lethal injection and was pronounced dead at the Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt shortly after 9 p.m Tuesday.
Prosecutors proved Elliott killed a Woodbridge couple in January 2001 to win the love of a former stripper and escort he met online. She was involved in a bitter custody fight with her ex, Robert Finch.
Elliott traveled to Finch's Woodbridge home and shot him multiple times and then turned the gun on Finch's new girlfriend.
Paul Ebert is the Prince William County Commonwealth's Attorney who prosecuted the case.
"Elliott didn't have a criminal record and was a very intelligent man who used that knowledge to carry out his crimes," Ebert told Fox 5's Will Thomas.
Like most death row inmates, Elliott maintained his innocence even in the very end.
