HAGERSTOWN, Md. - After a web site survey ranked Hagerstown # 2 for ugly guys in the U.S. some local businesses set out to prove them wrong. The Hagerstown Hot Ones calendar features some of the lookers around town.
Gabe Fortmann is feeling a bit more Hollywood these days, Hollywood in Hagerstown.
Fort is being teased by his friends because he's been asked to pose for a calendar. That made the 35-year-old mortgage broker want to check his own calendar to make sure it wasn't April Fools day.
It's no joke - Icon Graphics and Thomas Radley Photography have teamed up.
Two weeks ago, the website totalbeauty.com declared Hagerstown's guys among the ugliest in the nation.
The website said Hagerstown has too many smokers, too many fat guys and too few college degrees.
"We talked about how we could combat this image. How we could promote our community, which we love, as well as debunking all these myths about ourselves," said Anna Draper of Icon Graphics.
Draper's boss put her in charge of finding the right guys.
"It was really rough, wait 'til he gets my expense report."
She approached a lot of strangers, "Of course, it was awkward because I'd have to walk up to this table of guys at one of our pubs and say, hey, do you guys live in Hagerstown?"
They took the photographs at local landmarks- like the John Hager house. It's the home of the person who founded Hagerstown. A portion of the proceeds from calendar sales will go to a local non-profit called REACH, that helps the homeless.
"With the way the economy is right now, everyone needs a little
push, a little help. I just think it's good to get out there and
help everyone that needs to be helped," said Aaron Hartman, another
calendar guy.
