WASHINGTON, D.C. - D.C. has one of the highest HIV/AIDS rates in the country, with 3 percent of all adults and adolescents affected. So, health officials are now pushing the female condom as a new weapon in the fight against the AIDS epidemic.
The MAC Cosmetics company has given the city a $500,000 grant to fund the distribution of a half-million free female condoms. The city's HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, STD and TB Administration is handing them out at barber shops, beauty salons, nail salons and carry-outs in Wards 7 and 8, where the rates of HIV are the highest.
The FC2 female condom is a new generation of female condom, said to be more user-friendly. They are now also available for purchase at CVS drug stores in the city. They cost about $6.49.
