SILVER SPRING, Md. - At 10 years old, Matthew Millstein can certainly color inside
the lines, but he pays no attention to borders-- at least
international borders.
Matthew says "everybody's equal," but he learned early that
life is not equal for everybody. When he was 4, his mom did some
charity work to help kids in Haiti.
"They didn't have any food. No moms or dads and that their waters were really dirty," said Matthew.
So, Matthew started making greeting cards. He calls them cards of joy.
"When you purchase a card, you should have a feeling—'Wow! I am helping somebody I don't even know,'" said Matthew.
All the proceeds go to a non-profit called Beyond Borders that helps poor people in Haiti.
"It's a really cool feeling because you know that you can make a difference. It doesn't matter how old you are - you can just help," says Matthew.
So when he heard about the Haiti earthquake, Matthew said, "I was very sad. I got tears in my eyes."
Matthew started selling the cards a few years ago in his parents' beauty salon. Soon, he decided he needed a website. His dad created one. He has seen an increase in sales of the cards since the quake.
Over the last two years, he's raised over a $1,000 for
charity. Now, he sells the cards on the web at
www.cardsofjoy.org.
