WASHINGTON, D.C. - Emotions were running high Wednesday night at the site of a deadly drive-by shooting in Southeast D.C. that left four people dead. Family members and neighbors of the victims say they're angry over the senseless violence that has claimed so many young lives.

Nardyne Jefferies is heartbroken after her 16-year-old daughter Brishell Jones was gunned down. She had already taken her daughter out of public school because of the violence, and she told FOX 5 Brishell had planned to go to culinary school.

"Cordon bleu-- she cooked all the time," Jefferies said. "She was just a beautiful little girl inside and out, and always wanted to help people."

Mumin Yaseen lost his surrogate son, 19-year-old William Jones—who was also known as Marley.

"He wasn't my biological son, but I raised him for four years," Yaseen said. "He was a young man just trying to find himself-- just trying to go back to school and get his GED."

DeVaughn Boyd was a high school student who was just 18 years old. His family said he was on his way to the grocery store when he got caught in the crossfire.

"It's ridiculous. What else can you think of something like that? It's absolutely ridiculous and soon children that are younger, what are they gonna have?" said Jeanine Stewart, Boyd's aunt. "It's awful. My family is dealing with it. Our condolences go out to the rest of the families who lost someone, but it's absolutely ridiculous, senseless."

Just before the shooting on South Capitol Street, another victim was shot and killed on nearby Galveston Street SW. Police say 17-year-old Tavon Nelson was shot, and he was later pronounced dead at an area hospital.

D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Service Department personnel transported multiple victims from the scene from the South Capitol Street shootings to various hospitals in the D.C. area.

The five surviving victims were transported to various hospitals for treatment. Their identities are being withheld because they are witnesses in the case.

"This is a horrible, senseless tragedy, and my thoughts and prayers go out to the families, friends and neighbors of the victims," said Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, who spoke at a news conference at the scene on Wednesday night. "We commend our first responders for their swift action that saved the lives of several victims and lead to the arrest of three of the suspects this case. Police will work around the clock to ensure this case is brought to closure."

"We have made arrests in this case, but there is still another suspect at large," Police Chief Cathy Lanier stressed. "We need members of community to come forward and provide additional information.
