America's Freedom Festival" kicked off at the Patriot Center in Fairfax on Saturday night. The concert and fundraiser was planned months ago ... but became a tribute to the military families caught up in the Fort Hood tragedy.
The concert was beamed to military men and women...at 350 bases in 170 countries around the world.
Country music star Phil Vassar...who opened the show...says he has spent time at the military base and his thoughts are with the soldiers and their families. He says they should know that millions around the country are supporting them in this tough time too.
Montgomery Gentry and Lee Ann Womack also performed.
The concert raises money for the American Freedom Foundation. That organization has raised more than $600,000 over the past three years for military families.
