WASHINGTON, D.C. - Why did the zombies cross the road? The answer: to keep you safe.
It may look funny to see people with their arms outstretched lumbering across K Street. It's part of a new Streetsmart campaign by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments.
They're hoping to make people pay attention to what's around them when crossing the street. Many people are distracted by cell phones, head phones and plain old daydreaming.
"We all know that when flesh meets steel, the results can be horrific and the aftermath can be life-changing or life-ending," said Asst.
Chief Pat Burke of the Metropolitan Police Department. Every four days, a pedestrian or bicyclist is hit by a car and killed somewhere in the D.C. metro area. A student was hit just this morning outside a Montgomery County High School.
"Whether we're behind a steering wheel, on our feet or pedaling a bike, we all need to do a better job of looking out for each other," said Burke.
In addition to Halloween, there's another reason they're launching the campaign right now. This weekend is when we turn back the clocks. An extra hour of darkness means more danger for pedestrians.
