MT. RAINIER, Md. - Police say two men walked into the Mount Rainier Mini Grocery Store on 34th Street in Mount Rainier, Maryland late Thursday afternoon and shot the cashier. He is the 20-year-old son of the couple that owns the store, and he was apparently shot in the back.
The victim's mother didn't want to appear on television, but told FOX 5 that two shots were fired. One of the bullets crashed through the wall behind the counter and left behind a hole.
"We heard from talking to people that the guy was shot in the side, and they took him away in the ambulance," said Nancy Wilson, who lives in the neighborhood.
Police say the victim is going to live. He was at the hospital on Thursday night being treated for his wound. After firing the shots, the two gunmen ran off.
There's a laundromat next door and a church across the street, but apparently nobody outside the store witnessed the shooting. Longtime customers say the violence is upsetting.
"I got to go home next door and think about my friend, waving and talking," said resident Luther Early.
Crime scene investigators with the Prince George's County Police Department are gathering evidence, and may have lifted a fingerprint or two.
Police sources tell FOX 5 that about five years ago, the same business was robbed three times. They installed a surveillance system. There is a camera in the store, but we're told there is no videotape.
You can see the camera behind the counter. But FOX 5 was told it's of no help to investigators. Sources say the gunmen were seen lurking outside the store before the shooting. Police are not certain robbery was the motive.
