D.C. Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee has warned parents and staff that hundreds of D.C. Public School employees will have to be laid off because of a $40-million budget shortfall, and that the layoffs would happen by September 30. But so far, it's uncertain just how many teachers will be included in that number and when they'll get their notice.

That is making a lot of people angry, including students at the Duke Ellington School Of The Arts. They walked out of classes to protest on Tuesday. They chanted, "No teachers, no education!"

Washington Teachers Union President George Parker is equally frustrated. He says he's heard the school system hired 900 new teachers this summer. He finds it mindboggling that one month later, they are surprised to have a financial crisis that could mean hundreds of layoffs.

Chancellor Rhee's office tells FOX 5 they are still finalizing budget adjustments, so they don't have numbers yet on how many teachers will be riffed.
