CHEVY CHASE, Md. - Imagine coming home from work to discover that your home has been condemned.
That's exactly what happened to eight families living in an apartment complex off Newdale Drive in Chevy Chase, Maryland. There are five buildings in the apartment complex, and only one has been condemned. But neighbors wonder if they're next.
New Jersey native Evan Evangelou is barely unpacked and already he's moving again. His apartment at Newdale Mews was officially condemned.
"I left about 9:30 this morning and I was surprised a couple of hours later what happened next door," said Evangelou.
Neighbor Kelly Mullally showed us the problems shortly before being forced out.
"At first I thought I needed a new mattress. But come to find out, it's not the mattress, it's the floor-- its starting to cave in, " said Mullally.
Over the past few weeks, she noticed the floors started sinking. Suddenly there was more space between the ceiling and floor. There are cracks in the wall, and even the dresser that normally sits against the wall started leaning.
Resident Sandy Gorton had the same problems. She got a building inspector to the apartment on Tuesday. Within minutes Montgomery County officially condemned the building and residents were forced to move out. It was all too much for Gorton
"What if this starts to break down on everybody, this is eight families," said Gorton.
While residents moved out, people in neighboring building question their safety.
Montgomery County will look into what caused the building to start sinking. In the meantime, the owner has offered to pay for the residents to stay in hotels or relocate them.
