WASHINGTON, D.C. - D.C. officials say a sinkhole has opened up along Pennsylvania Avenue NW and it's causing some delays for drivers in the area.

The sinkhole was reported in the 2600 block of Pennsylvania Ave. NW between 28th Street and the overpass over Rock Creek Parkway. That's near the Four Seasons Hotel. The eastbound lanes of Pennsylvania Avenue are closed in the area around the sinkhole, while the westbound lanes remain open.

Reports from the scene indicate that the sinkhole opened up in the middle of one lane, and it's about 4 feet by 4 feet wide, and 5 feet deep. Police are holding pedestrians back from the scene because they say they're afraid it has weakened and could grow larger.

The closures are expected to affect the evening rush-hour commute, and drivers should take another route to avoid the area.
