WASHINGTON - Hundreds of friends, relatives and co-workers of Metro train operator Jeanice McMillan turned out at a Southeast church Friday to say a final farewell.
The driver of the train that crashed last Monday, killing 9 and injuring more than 70 others was remembered as popular and friendly, and praised as a hero.
Metro Board Chairman John Catoe told the crowd packed into the Temple of Praise that McMillan was doing her job on Monday.
"She took an act that I believe in my judgment, ultimately will determine that she saved lives," Catoe said to a standing ovation.
Mayor Adrian Fenty offered his condolences to her family, telling them the city had lost a fantastic public servant.
McMillan's only son, 19-year-old Jordan, struggled to find words. He said his mother was a beautiful woman, who made sure he went to school and paid for him to go to college. He said he was really going to miss hearing her call his name.
