ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Drivers, watch those red lights in Alexandria. Three new red light cameras are up and running. Soon, running a light in the city will cost you $50.
The cameras have been erected at South Patrick and Franklin Streets, South Patrick and Gibbons Streets, and Duke and South Walker Streets.
Some are concerned the new enforcement cameras are just another way to tax residents.
But Vice Mayor Dell Pepper is in favor of the new cameras.
"This is not there to raise money," said Pepper. "It's there for safety, and it works."
Many motorists FOX 5 spoke with on Wednesday said they are concerned money is also an issue because in D.C. and Montgomery County, millions of dollars are generated through electronic red light and speed enforcement.
Virginia does have strict rules when it comes to red light cameras. There can only be one camera per 10,000 residents, and extensive research of each intersection must be conducted before a camera can be put into operation.
A 30-day grace period is in place currently. One warning will be sent to motorists during the first month. Following that period, motorists who run a light will receive a $50 citation.
