MT. VERNON, Va. - Friends of a Mt. Vernon toddler who was attacked by a pit bull say the boy is recovering from his wounds, but the owner of that dog is facing nine charges.

Fairfax County Police say 24-year-old Erika Williams took the 3 year old inside her home after he asked to see the dogs. Police say she knew he was attacked, but did not notify his parents or seek medical attention.

William's friends and family tell a different story. They say it was all an unfortunate accident.

It happened during a friend's wedding in the back yard on Saturday night. Two pit bulls were kept in a pen on the second floor of the home on Mount Vernon Highway. They say somehow the child got to the dogs, possibly by opening the sliding glass door.

The child then ran out of the house unnoticed. When they spotted him, he was several houses away.

The dog is currently being held in the county animal shelter in quarantine while the case is being investigated.

Police say the child was bitten multiple times on his upper body.
