LAUREL, Md. - Some D.C. area students got the lesson of a lifetime on Thursday when renowned poet Maya Angelou paid them a visit at school.
Dr. Angelou, a writer and civil rights activist, stopped by Oak Hill Academy in Laurel, Maryland to spend time with the kids there and share some of her life stories. The school is for at-risk students, and it is supported by Angelou's See Forever Foundation.
While she was there, Dr. Angelou gave the students some profound advice.
"So be yourself-- be the man, the woman you know yourself to be," she said.
"If you have a chance, you think you might be able to help one person, you will say 'yes, thank you,'" Angelou continued.
Dr. Angelou was in the area for a fundraiser for her foundation.
In addition to supporting the Oak Hill Youth Center, her foundation
also supports the Maya Angelou Public Charter School in D.C.
