SEAT PLEASANT, Md. - Police say a 68-year-old man who was found stabbed to death in
his Seat Pleasant home apparently fought with is killer before he
died.
Willie Jones was found dead by his daughter inside the home
after she hadn't heard from him in a few days. He was a well-known
man in the neighborhood, and friends and family say he could
usually be found in one of two places: either sitting on his front
stoop, or visiting with friends down the street at the Sugar Shack
Convenience Store.
Sometime over the weekend, Jones was killed, and
investigators say it was quite possibly at the hands of someone he
knew.
"Mr. Willie was quiet, he wouldn't hurt a soul," said
neighbor Renee Williams. "He was just a quiet older man, you know--
didn't bother anybody, kept to himself. It's just unbelievable.
It's just unnecessary."
Police say there was no forced entry, and detectives are
investigating the possibility that Jones knew his attacker. Laverne
Jones says her dad always kept the doors locked.
"I had to use the key to unlock the door and I heard the
alarm going off-- the clock alarm," she told FOX 5. "I then said,
'Daddy Daddy,' I didn't hear anything."
Then, she peeked into the bedroom and saw her father on the
bed.
"We all grew up around here in this neighborhood, and for
someone to do that to my family-- to a person who didn't do nothing
to no one-- is sad," she said.
Jones raised four children in his home, and he spent his
career installing carpet. All day long on Tuesday, men who had
worked with him over the years dropped by the house wanting to know
if it was true.
"He was a fun guy to be around, you know," said Carroll
Pollard, a friend. "Like I said he stayed to himself, didn't roam
around a lot. People in the neighborhood knew him and really liked
him-- most people liked him that I knew of."
Detectives were back at the crime scene on Tuesday,
inspecting the outside of the house and taking pictures. Prince
George's County Police say they don't have a motive for the murder.
It's unclear if anything was taken from the house.
The last time anyone remembers seeing Jones alive was over
the weekend. Most people said they had seen him on Saturday.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Prince Georges County Police Departments Homicide Unit at (301) 772-4925.
