WASHINGTON, D.C. - While the families of victims of the tragedy at the Army post in Fort Hood, Texas try to deal with their grief, the family of the suspect is trying to come to grips with what happened as well.
They say they knew Dr. Nidal Malik Hasan was unhappy in the Army, but they never could have imagined this. News organizations were camped out at a home in Falls Church where Hasan's relatives live beginning early Friday morning.
The relatives of Hasan aren't talking to the media, but they are talking to the FBI. The family of the suspected gunman is still in seclusion in the Falls Churche home. Those who live nearby describe them as good neighbors and good citizens.
Late Friday, a cousin-- Nader Hasan-- sent an email to the Associated Press saying, "We are asking why this happened, and the answer is we simply don't know. We cannot explain, nor do we excuse what happened yesterday."
In an interview with Fox News right after the shooting rampage, the cousin said they knew Hasan had been trying to get out of the military since 9/11, and he speculated that getting deployed may simply have been too much. He said his cousin had told him of horrific things he was dealing with from psychologically from the war, and he believed it was Hasan's "worst nightmare."
Nader Hasan also told FOX News his cousin was hiring a lawyer to see if he could pay the government back for his schooling and get out of the military, but the family says that appeal went nowhere, and now police say he is the triggerman in the worst mass killing on a U.S. military base.
Our family is feeling sadness... We feel so much sadness for the families of those who were hurt... Our condolences go out to them... We're still trying to make sense of this.
In that email, Hasan's cousin said they answered all the FBI's questions and will continue to cooperate.
