(MYFOX NATIONAL) - Students that use Facebook spend less time studying and have a lower grade point average than students who do not use the social media site, according to a new study.

Researchers at Ohio State University studied the habits of 219 students at Ohio State, 148 had Facebook accounts. The study found that Facebook users in the study had GPAs between 3.0 and 3.5, while non-users had GPAs between 3.5 and 4.0.

"We can't say that use of Facebook leads to lower grades and less studying – but we did find a relationship there," said Aryn Karpinski, co-author of the study and a doctoral student in education at Ohio State University.

Another study found that social media sites like Twitter and Facebook could harm moral values. University of Southern California researchers found that emotions like admiration and compassion take time to develop, but sites like Twitter send out rapid fire news and information that do not allow users time to fully absorb the experience.

"We need to understand how social experience shapes interactions between the body and mind, to produce citizens with a strong moral compass," said researcher Mary Helen Immordino-Yang of the USC Rossier School of Education.
