WASHINGTON - D.C. schools officials say one Spingarn High School student was killed and another wounded in a shooting.

Police say two teens were shot around 8:45 p.m. Monday in the 1300 block of Holbrook Street, Northeast. That's more than a mile from the school.

The teens were taken to an area hospital, where one student was pronounced dead. Officials identify the student killed as 17-year-old Joseph Sharps Jr. Police say the second teen was admitted with injuries that are not thought to be life-threatening.

Schools officials say a crisis team is offering support to Spingarn students and staff and will remain at the school for as long as they are needed.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the police at (202) 727-9099 or 1-888-919-CRIME (1-888-919-2746).

Additionally, anonymous information may be submitted to D.C. CRIME SOLVERS at 1-866-411-TIPS and to the department’s TEXT TIP LINE by text messaging 50411. If the information provided by the caller to the Crime Solvers Unit leads to an arrest and indictment, that caller will be
eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
