WASHINGTON - A series of 80-foot-tall columns and a "tapestries" of metal would be the centerpieces of a national memorial in Washington to former president and World War II general Dwight D. Eisenhower.
The design for the memorial by celebrity architect Frank Gehry was unveiled Thursday in Washington. A commission overseeing the memorial still has to raise millions to pay for it, and the design must be approved by a series of government agencies. But the commission expects the memorial to be finished in 2015.
The monument is expected to cost $100 million.
Eisenhower, a Republican and the 34th president, served two terms from 1953 to 1961.
