The Coast Guard unit in Washington, D.C. issued a press release advising they will be conducting a training exercise in the Georgetown Channel (between Arlington Memorial and 14th Street bridges) on Thursday 22 October, between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.

Two boats with mounted automatic weapons will be used.

One of the boats will act as the aggressor. The other will defend the security zone.

No live fire or blanks will be used in the training exercise.

Two TV networks confused a similar exercise on September 11, 2009.

Simulated chatter over a Coast Guard radio was mistaken for actual events.

It was reported that the Coast Guard had opened fire on a suspicious vessel near ceremonies attended by President Barack Obama.

CNN reported 10 shots had been fired based on information it heard over the network's police scanner.
