How's this for a Friday afternoon lunch out: You're sitting outside a popular burger joint when all of a sudden, a group of black SUVs pull up. Before you know it, you're dining experience puts you right beside the leader of the free world.
It started as just another busy lunch day at Five Guys in Southeast D.C. That is, until President Barack Obama showed up.
"How are you?" he said to patrons. "We're going to go get some burgers."
"We come around the corner, there was cars everywhere," said Katherine Auld, a Five Guys customer. "Then somebody said, Obama is in Five Guys. Then he came out, and I got a photo and it was so cool."
The President ordered a cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, mustard, and jalapeno peppers. Then, he got eight more burgers and 10 fries to go. As he waited, he stood around eating peanuts and talking to customers.
"Everybody is laughing, and oh my God, excited," said Anna Montoya, a Five Guys manager who was there when Obama arrived.
Montoya gave president number 44 order number 41.
"He is very friendly," she said. "He called all the employees and he said, 'Come on, guys, I want to take a picture with you guys.'"
Earlier this month, the President and Vice President Joe Biden stopped by Ray's Hell Burger in Arlington to grab lunch.
"The exposure that his visit brought definitely has brought us a whole new group of people," said Michael Landrum of Ray's Hell Burger. "Washington is a political town, and people follow the doings of the President closely."
So for owners, the presence of the President can bring a lot of attention that leads to a bump in business. Customers, meanwhile, just think it's cool.
