A D.C. Housing Authority officer was accidentally shot in the leg on Friday afternoon in Southeast Washington, police say.

It happened in the 1100 block of K Street SE just after 4 p.m.

Early reports were that the officer was shot, but it was later learned that another officer's gun was accidentally discharged. Chief Cathy Lanier says the two officers were struggling with a suspect when it happened, and one of them was hit in the leg by the bullet.

Police say both officers are with the D.C. Housing Authority. Authorities say two officers were in pursuit of the suspect, who was on a motorcycle. They say the suspect ditched the bike and fled, and the two officers chased him. When they caught him, there was a struggle and the gun discharged.

According to investigators, the bullet hit the road before bouncing up and hitting the other officer in the leg.

The suspect was taken into custody. There's no word yet on why he was being chased.

Investigators also tell FOX 5 that while the chase and struggle were underway, someone came along and stole the motorcycle.
