WASHINGTON, D.C. - The 5200 block of Foote Street in Northeast Washington is now Marvin Gaye Way.
Marvin Gaye was known as the Prince of Motown. He was also D.C.'s own, born and raised in the District, and the street was named for him on the 25th anniversary of his death.
He is remembered for music with a message, was Motown's top solo male artist in the '60s, with hits like "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," "Let's Get It On," and "Distant Lover."
At a ceremony unveiling the new Marvin Gaye Way, Ward 7 Councilwoman Yvette Alexander said the street, which is next to Marvin Gaye Park, is part of a plan to revitalize the neighborhood, with new shops, residences and cultural venues coming. The neighborhood crowd sang the song that became Gaye's National Anthem, "What's Going On." Others paying tribute included Joe Herndon, who sings with the Temptations, and also grew up in the Northeast neighborhood, Motown Ambassador Brian Summers, and Steve Coleman of Washington Parks and People.
Riverside Community Center on Marvin Gaye Way used to be the Crystal Lounge, where Gaye gave some of his first performances.
Washington Parks and People is hosting a Marvin Gaye Music Festival in the park on Saturday, April 4 from 2 to 8 p.m.
