WASHINGTON - What if you really wanted to see the "24" or the American Idol finale live but just couldn't be at home in front of the TV?
FOX and other local broadcasters have a solution.
It's called Mobile DTV. The new technology was unveiled Monday at the Newseum for the mobile DTV Consumer Showcase.
Digital TV that comes into your home is bringing sharper pictures, brighter colors and more free channels than ever before.
Now, you're going to be able to get that same signal quality wherever you go.
Free television, is becoming portable again laptops, DVD players, mobile phones and more are being outfitted with a special computer chip, developed by LG Electronics, that acts like a tiny digital TV receiver.
John Godfrey of Samsung shows off some of the new technology.
"It is like the old portable TVs that people use to use. It's much high quality picture it is like High Definition quality on a small screen."
And the signal stays strong and clear, as John Taylor of LG Electronics demonstrated, "this takes digital to the next level."
Much of the live local programming will be free on Mobile DTV enabled devices.
FOX 5 and my20 are among the first stations in the country testing the technology.
Consumers in the Washington DC market should be able to buy Mobile DTV devices in the fall of 2010.
Viewers will have the added benefit of being able to get emergency alerts, like weather warnings, wherever they are.
It's a chance for local broadcasting to keep up with the competition.
"Broadcasting needs a new jolt, we've all heard about the advertising market being tough. There's a lot of product coming from cable and satellite, so broadcasters have to reinvent themselves," says Brandon Burgess from the Open Mobile Video Coalition.
That means bringing live, local programming to where the viewers are.
